Woodblock printing or block printing is a technique for printing text, images or patterns used widely throughout East Asia and originating in China in antiquity as a method of printing on textiles and later paper. As a method of printing on cloth, the earliest surviving examples from China date to before 220 AD.
Materials Required:
wooden blocks
dye/ paint
fabric
sponge
newspaper
Process:
set up the work space.
spread the fabric.
Dip the wooden block in the dye/ paint.
Press the wooden block on the fabric and create patterns.
Once the pattern is created, leave the fabric for drying.
Block printing is such a fun technique to do! One of the best parts are, you can create your own blocks using lino sheets. It's amazing to see how we can just create different patterns using different prints and dyes. I also did block printing on my cotton mask to make it look a little interesting!
