THE DESIGN PROCESS

A design process defines every designer’s journey to solve wicked problems. This is an elaborated process and each designers has their own style which they follow. It consists of a series of several steps that are followed. The design process plays a vital role in the creation of a good design.
The design process involves various steps which are:
Brainstorming
Brainstorming is a method designers use to generate ideas to solve clearly defined design problems. It lays a foundation of good design process. When I have to come up with ideas, I simply take a piece of paper and write my thoughts on to it. When you write your thoughts you automatically create a mind map. In the above picture you can see how I have mind mapped about myself using lucid charts. The mind map includes what I like, dislike, emotions, hobbies, etc.
Inspiration board
The mind map helped me find my inspiration. I love golden aesthetics and it inspires me a lot. My interest lies in fashion, luxury and more therefore I decided to research on these topics. I made an inspiration board using canva which is in the form of a collage. I have always believed and inspired from the moto "Do more of what makes you happy" so I added that too.
Mood board
The mood board gets your feelings in motion. It is a collection of images depicting your mood. The mood is extracted from the inspiration board. My mood board gives a pleasant vibe and not to forget "main apni favorite hoon"!
Material board
A material board is based on textures you want to project. It is extracted from inspiration and mood board, in which we fix a varied range of sample materials from their design concept that is being developed. The above material board shows glitter, suppleness...
Color board
I extracted 5 colors from the board and came up with a swatch. This is the color palette of the design. I chose a muted color palette keeping the boards on my mind. It gives a warm, soothing tone.
The final stage
With this the entire procedure comes to an end and you're ready to execute your design. For example from the above design process I could collaborate with my final design which is creating a handbag using fur, beads, shelled texture and a warm/pleasing color tone.
Design process plays a crucial part of any design as it not only paves the way but also makes you aware of the drawbacks involved in your plan. It's not as easy as it sounds, a lot of thought process, creativity and explorations goes into it, but the end result always gives you a sense of gratification.
This step by step process helped me understand the assignment and cleared all my complexities. I was amazed at how so many ideas just popped up during the whole process. This exercise changed my old-rusty thought process and it's helped me look at things in new perspective.
